The series was very popular and about 19 - 22 prints by Hiroshige, about 30 prints by Kuniyoshi and about 8 prints by Kunisada were known to be published.
No. 25. "Kanaya". Crossing the Oi river. Poem by Umeya has a pun for "Shimada-gami" (a type of hair-do for a married woman), who is sitting in the palanquin. "Shimada" is also the Tokaido station one prior to Kanaya.

Hiroshige was born as the son of a fire warden. He started his career as a woodblock engraver. Hiroshige's fame is based on his landscape designs. Famous are his prints of the Tokaido, a kind of highway system in ancient Japan connecting Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige produced more than 30 series on the Tokaido. His compositions were influenced by Western art. After his death his prints had a great impact on French impressionism.
