Item 71950 - Twelve Hours in the Pleasure Quarter - Seiro Juni Toki - Hour of Tiger
From the series, "Seiro Ju-ni Toki" (Twelve Hours in the Pleasure Quarter). "Yoru, Tora no Koku" (Night, The Hour of Tiger : about 4 o'clock in the morning). The beautiful courtesan of the House of Tsuruya, Oh-yodo, is relaxing with a tobacco smoke and chatting with a fellow courtesan.
The theme, "Seiro Ju-ni Toki", which depicts the life of courtesan at every hour for 12 hours, was made popular by the early Edo bijin-ga master, Utamaro (Ca. 1794). It inspired the French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's lithographic portfolio "Elles".
