Kyosai Kawanabe, 1831-1889      Beyond Mainstream

Kyosai Kawanabe was born as the son of a samurai. He was an artist with many skills working as a painter, printmaker and illustrator. As a child he joined the school of Kuniyoshi Utagawa. He is famous for his prints with humorous and caricature like subjects. He is also nicknamed the 'comic genius'. Kyosai is said to have had a strong liking for 'sake', a Japanese alcoholic beverage.

Description From the comic series, "Kyosai Hyaku Zu" (The One Hundred Pictures by Kyosai). A samurai on horse ran into the rope tied to a bucket of a well. People and dogs were running to see the commotion.
Kyosai Kawanabe was well known for his humorous, often satirical depictions of the animals and the daily life subjects. His unruly nature caused problems with the humor-loss public authorities... apparently none were serious.
