Kogyo Tsukioka, 1869-1927    Noh Theater
Kogyo Tsukioka studied with Taiso (also Tsukioka) Yoshitoshi whose name he took. Later he studied with Ogata Gekko. The artist specialized on the depiction of Noh theater scenes. His most active period was around the turn of the century.

Description From the series "Noh-gaku Hyaku Ban" ("One Hundred Noh Plays"), "Tomonaga".
The series was aimed to express the traditional noh-ga painting style rather than ukiyo-e style by woodblock printing. Throughout the series, the special printing technique to mimic the paint brush strokes were used as well as the generous amount of gold, silver and copper metallic pigments. Kogyo stated that he wanted to express the subtle atmosphere of the stage using abstract background. The strong characterization of the roles and the life-like rendering of the details add the noble quality to this series.
