Zeshin Shibata, 1807-1891    Celebrated Painter, Printmaker and Laquerer
Zeshin Shibata was born in Edo (old name for Tokyo) as the son of a sculptor. Originally he started as an apprentice for the lacquer craftsmanship. Later he studied painting. In 1890 he became a court painter. His origins as a lacquerer are reflected in his prints by a frequent use of urushi, the Japanese lacquer. Zeshin was a celebrated artist and craftsman during his lifetime and was appointed to represent Japan at the World Exhibition in Paris and other International exhibitions in Philadelphia and Vienna.
