Kiyochika Kobayashi, 1847-1915      The Last Mohican of Ukiyo-e

Kiyochika Kobayashi studied western style and Japanese style oil painting. Later he turned to woodblock printing. During the Sino-Japanese war he depicted many war scenes on Ukiyo-e. His style is a synthesis of Western and Japanese painting style. His works showed the strong influence of Western perspectives, changes of lights and mainly night effects. He is considered the last of the important Ukiyo-e print makers.

Description Kiyochika made the compilation of humorous gestures and faces titled "Shinban Sanju-ni So" (New Thirty-two Faces< originally published in 1877). Because of the popularity of the series, he made additional designs and combined them in one series, "Tsuika Hyaku Men So" (Addition; One Hundred Faces).
From left top to right bottom : "Shibire" (Being numb). "Teishu modoranukan" (Husband didn't come home overnight). "Atama buchi" (Hit the head ... Ouch!). "Kandoko" (Having temper tantrum, being angry).
Signature "Kiyochika" on the lower left inset.
Dated 1883.

Condition Very good ... Backed. Slight creases.
