Toyokuni worked as a pottery dealer. He was the son-in-law of Toyokuni Utagawa whose name he took after the death of his master in 1825. However he got into some trouble with other colleagues for the use of that name. So, in his later years, he called himself back to Toyoshige.

"Tosei Gonin Bijo" (Modern Five Beauties). A beauty is holding a tobacco pipe on a river bank. Cherry trees are blossoming and two birds are swimming in the river.
This print was printed in the fashionable "aizuri-e" (picture with blue-tone only) style.
