Senpan Maekawa 1888-1960
Maekawa Senpan was born as the son of a shopkeeper family in Kyoto. He studied art and took a job as a cartoonist for a satirical magazine. Later he had even a cartoon series of his own in a Sunday newspaper about a clumsy bear. Maekawa Senpan made his first print in Sosaku Hanga style in 1919. After the end of the Pacific war he became famous with prints in cheerful colors showing customs and festivities of the common people in the countryside.

Senpan Maekawa 1888-1960

From the series "Tokyo Kaiko Zue" ("Recollections of Tokyo"), with all together 15 designs from various, wellnown Sosaku Hanga artists.
This famous design seemed to be Senpan's favorite design, also. He used it for the series "Shin Tokyo Hyakkei" ("One Hundred Views of New Tokyo") in 1929, and re-used it later in this series in 1945.
The print comes in the original folder with the original label.

"Maekawa Senpan" on the bottom left. "Maekawa Senpan" is printed on a strip of paper and pasted on the folder.
