Tokushi Katsuhira 1904-1971
Tokushi Katsuhira became an artist thanks to the folk art movement in Japan of the 1920s. Tokushi Katsuhira came from a family of farmers and papermakers (A difficult work and for the poor people in the countryside a means to earn some extra money during the winter season.). He was a woodcarver before he tried his first woodblock print in the 1920s. His style is reminiscent of Senpan Maekawa. In 1951, the artist was honored with the Culture Prize of Akita Prefecture. His works are in typical sosaku hanga style and show the customs and habits of the local people in Akita. The designs are quite charming and well made.
