Kiyoshi Tanaka was born in Hyogo prefecture. After he graduated from a high school, he became an apprentice of a dye designer in Kyoto. His works were exhibited in the prestigious CWAJ exhibition during 1978 - 1982. The book, "Tunagi" for his kata-zome hanga works was published in 1980. He contributed several illustrations for the Asahi newspapers during 1981 - 85. In 1987, one of his design was made into a card by UNICEF.
After 1973 to present-time, he has been active in solo and group exhibitions in Japan.
