Tokaido Meisho No Uchi - June 2, 2005
Dear friends of Japanese prints
This auction is something special. We offer the first 60 lots
from a consignment of 133 prints from the woodblock
series "Tokaido - meishi-no-uchi" from 1863. The series
was designed by more than a dozen artists and commissioned
to commemorate the procession of shogun Iemochi in 1863
from Edo to Kyoto to pay his respect to the emperor.
All sheets are without any major condition problems.
Such a nearly complete set is rather rare. The National
Diet Library of Japan has 141 prints of the series in their
posession. Some of their missing prints are even among our offered lots.
We put some effort in writing an article with background
information and a few references that we could find on the
internet. Although this is one of the largest series ever
published during the Edo period, we could not get a hundred
percent clear picture of the precise number and artists
in this series. If you have reliable information, please contact us.
This article also includes instructions how you can view
and read the information on the Japanese-only web site of
the National Diet Library of Japan by using a translation
feature provided by Google. It is not complicated. Try it, it works!
You find the article on

In writing so much about this series, we nearly forgot
to mention the auction! You find it as always on
www.artelino.com/auction/catalog.asp and it will end
next Sunday, June 5 at 8:00 PM local time (CET) = 2:00 PM in New York.
Enjoy the collection, and if you like our site,
please bid in our auctions and buy from us.
your artelino team
