Meiji Prints Auction, March 7, 2004
Dear friends of Meiji prints
Auction # 84 offers 67 prints, all very different in
subject, style and prices, but with one common bond.
They were made during the Meiji period (1868-1912).
Bidding is now open on
www.artelino.com/auction/catalog.asp.
The flagship prints in this auction are 13 prints by
probably the greatest meiji printmaker, Yoshitoshi -
from his series of "New Forms of 36 Ghosts".
Chikanobu is represented with bijin prints and genre
triptychs. Other artists are Toshikata Mizuno, Gekko,
Nobukazu Watanabe and Kokunimasu.
And last but not least, this auction offers 12 Japanese
war prints. They come from the famous Muller
collection and belong to the best in this genre.
Most are by Kiyochika Kobayashi, whose war prints are
ranked by critics as more subtle and artistically
elaborate. And fortunately the depiction of bloody
battlescenes is very much in the background. On
www.artelino.com/articles/japanese_war_prints.asp you
find an article about Japanese prints from the Sino-
and Russo-Japanese wars of 1894/95 and 1904/05.
kind regards
your artelino team
