Konrad Volkert (1906-1999) - Retrospective, Nov. 7, 2004
Dear art friends
Graphic works by German printmaker Konrad Volkert (1906-1999)
consigned directly by his heirs. In our view one of the greatest
German printmakers of the 20th century, who has not yet received
the public recognition he should have. There is one exception:
The British Museum has his works in their collection.
Even if you are a die-hard Japanese art aficionado, please take
a look at this collection. You find many motives ideal for
Christmas - maybe a great present for your mom who has no
affection to Japanese or Chinese prints.
The tragedy of this modest man was that he was at the wrong time
at the wrong place with the wrong subjects. Unwilling to
cooperate with the Nazis, he was sent to the frontlines of world
war II. And after world war II, his realistic style was not
in line with the "Zeitgeist". And with his focus on local
subjects he was not marketable for an international artist career.
Five years after his death and one year before his 100th
birthday it is time to take a closer look at Konrad Volkert.
We show works from 1924 until 1988 - a travel through the
history of Germany in the 20th century.
We tried to integrate into the descriptions information about
the artist. And we added in a kind of timeline the major
events of the years in which specific prints had been
created. We think one should understand the historical
background to understand this artist.
