Fake Ukiyo-e November 9, 2003Dear art friends Auction # 62 of Japanese Atozuri (late printings) and Fukkoku (reproductions) prints is open on www.artelino.com/auction/catalog.asp with a rather diverse mixture. First we offer 11 fake prints of early Edo masters. These prints were made between 1890 and 1940 by master fakers Takamizawa Eiji, Kaneko Fusui and Kobayashi Bunshichi and were meant to deceive with all tricks like old patina. Therefore they are no reproductions, but fake prints. For information about Takamizawa we recommend the book "Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints" by Helen Merritt on pages 36-37. Next we have some reproductions (fukkoku) of famous Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro prints. They are not meant to deceive, but are copies in good condition of famous designs by great masters like Hokusai that would cost thousands if available at all (..and in crummy condition). Late printings (atozuri) from the 1980s and 1990s of famous Shin Hanga prints are by Hasui, Kasamatsu, Hiroshi Yoshida and Takeji Asano. These prints were pulled by hand from the original blocks like their earlier editions. The difference is the time of the impression, the absence of condition problems and the lower price. Last but not least we offer 6 great posthumously drawn prints by Kaoru Kawano (1916-1965). kind regards your artelino team
