Prints by Chikanobu and Kunichika - July 21, 2005
Dear friends of Japanese prints
Bidding for auction # 196 is open on
www.artelino.com/auction/catalog.asp with 47 original woodblock
prints by Chikanobu and Kunichika. The auction
will close coming Sunday, July 24 at 8:00 PM local time = 2:00 PM
in New York.
Chikanobu and Kunichika are leading artists of the Meiji period.
The two men were rather different - both in their characters and
in their printmaking styles. Kunichika (1835-1900), a drinker
and macho type, made traditional ukiyo-e - mainly images of the
kabuki theater, his third great passion. Chikanobu (1838-1912)
tried new grounds in the artistic and technical way of making
woodblock prints, but his subjects with scenes from Japan's past
could hardly have been more retrograde.
