Name for a feudal lord in the Edo period (1603-1867). A daimyo ruled over a province and reported to the shogun, the military leader in Japan during the Edo period. During the Meiji restauration, the institution of the daimyo was abolished and the provinces were replaced by prefectures. The daimyo had to return the land to the emperor and received a state pension.
