Daruma is the legandary founder of Zen Buddhism. Born in India, he brought Zen Buddhism first to China and from their in the 6th century to Japan. He is usually depicted in a position of meditation. According to the legend he meditated for nine years in a cave. In order not to fall asleep he cut out his outlids and after nine years of motionless meditation he had lost the use of his legs and arms due to atrophy.
