Murasaki Shikibu is probably the best known Japanese female writer. She became immortal for her novel "Genji monogatari" (The Story of Prince Genji). It is a novel about the life and love affairs of an aristocratic prince in feudal Japan. Murasaki Shikibu (Lady Murasaki) lived around the turn of the millenium (978 to 1014?) and spent most of her life as a lady-in-waiting at the imperial court. In a diary and in the novel, she describes the customs and feelings of the Heian era out of first hand. "Genji monogatari" is considered to be one of world's earliest novels.
