Benkei is a legendary Japanese warrior from the time of the Genpei wars in feudal Japan. His life dates are given with 1155-1189. He was a huge guy with unnatural strengths. Benkei became the truthful follower of Yoshitsune, the brilliant military leader of the Minamato clan, who was later murdered by his own brother Yoritomo. Benkei defends his master until the very last moment when he finally dies under the attacks of an overwhelming force of Yoritomo troupes. On Japanese woodblock prints Benkei is recognizable by his huge body and his little black cap, showing him as a member of the Yamabushi sect.
