Chushingura is the title of probably the most popular kabuki play ever written. The story is about 47 samurai, who have only one thing in their minds: to revenge the unjustified death of their lord. The events took actually place in 1701. At the end, the 47 ronin (the Japanese name for masterless samurai) succeed in their revenge and behead the bad guy. But as their behavior was politically unaceptable, the ruling shogun forced the 47 ronin to commit suicide (seppuku) themselves. The verdict was disapproved by the public, but the shogunate opression was too strong.
