Fukkoku is the Japanese word for reproductions. The reproduction of Japanese prints became a booming business since the late 19th century due to a growing export demand from Europe, when especially in France a craze for everything Japanese had set in (Japonism) and tourism had started in Japan. Reproductions were made from famous originals by Hiroshige, Hokusai, Utamaro and many others. Also old surimono were frequently reproduced from newly carved block. The quality of these prints is often very high. After world war II, the reproduction activity has been extended to famous Shin Hanga prints.
