seppuku

Seppuku is a ritual suicide. The procedure was performed in a ceremonial way - often with spectators. It was an ugly and painful one. The person willing or forced to commit suicide sliced up his abdomen. The actual death was caused by an attendant who stood behind him and beheaded the suicidal candidate with a sword. Reasons to commit seppuku were related to what Japanese consider disgrace and honor. The whole thing is beyond grasp for a Western mind.
