Onnagata is a female role in kabuki theater played by men. In 1629 the Shogunate had banned all women from performing in kabuki plays. During the Meiji period a lifting of this ban was considered. But then everybody was so much used to Onnagata roles that it has been continued as a tradition until our times. (image by courtesy of Paul Binnie)
