embossing

Embossing - also called, "goufrage”, "blind pressing" - is a method where a raised design is impressed into the paper. Embossing can often be found on Japanese woodblock prints and is a deluxe feature - used only for better quality prints. In contemporary printmaking, many artists use embossing as "shallow paper bas-reliefs" to exploit the interplay of shadow and light.
