Chikanobu      Chiyoda Palace and Bijin

Catalog Chikanobu

Chikanobu Toyohara was a pupil of Kunichika Toyohara. Chikanobu is strong in the depiction of historical scenes from the past. But he displays the traditional scenes not in the old ukiyo-e style his master Kunichika would have done. His style is rather modern. And with intricate new techniques of depicting clouds or mist, he understands to create moods with his prints. A good example is his print series with scenes of court life around the Chiyoda palace.

Yoshitoshi      Horror and Tradition

Catalog Yoshitoshi

Yoshitoshi Tsukioka was a bizarre but exceptional printmaker during the transition from the Edo to the Meiji period. Obviously repelled by his father, he became a pupil of Kuniyoshi, who cared for him as if he was his own son. After Kuniyoshi's death, a hard struggle for survival began for Yoshitoshi. Only towards his late years he found recognition and financial security. Yoshitoshi's prints reflect the turmoils of the era with a strange mixture of bloody, cruel depictions in the style of tabloid reports and backward looking print series that emphasis the old values of Japanese culture.

Catalog Kuniyoshi

Kuniyoshi Utagawa was a pupil of Toyokuni - just like his rival Kunisada. The two men could have hardly been more different. While Kunisada was a successful but conceited printmaker, Kuniyoshi was the likeable guy, who had to go through tough times. A series of warrior prints brought finally success to Kuniyoshi. He remained a straightforward personality for the rest of his life and he liked cats. There was always a bunch of them strolling through his house and you can find them on his prints.

Kunisada      Prolific Artist

Catalog Kunisada

Kunisada was a pupil of Toyokuni I. He was the guy with a lot of luck in his life. Kunisada became a successful printmaker in his young years - with the effect that he assumed rather conceited attitudes for the rest of his life. At lifetime he was considered to be the best printmaker and his contemporaries put him even above Hokusai and Hiroshige. Kunisada used different artist names during his lifetime - the most frequently encountered is Toyokuni after his master. To avoid confusion he is referred to as Toyokuni III.
