Yoshikazu Utagawa was born in Edo (Tokyo) where he stayed for the rest of his life. He started as a pupil of Kuniyoshi Utagawa. Yoshikazu is a major printmaker of the Yokohama school. His favorite subjects were foreigners and foreign manners. He often signed his prints with Ichikawa Yoshikazu.

Yoshiiku was the son of a tea house proprietor. Together with Yoshitoshi he attended the printmaking school of Kuniyoshi. From this time dates a life-long rivalry with Yoshitoshi whom the young Yoshiiku bullied at school. In his time he was a popular newspaper illustrator.

Yoshiichi Ebata was born in 1899 in Aichi prefecture. He met Unichi Hiratsuka in 1930 and began to make woodblock prints. Yoshiichi Ebata was a founding member of "Shin-Hanga Shudan" in 1932 and "Kitsutsuki" in 1942.

Yasushi Omoto was born in Hokkaido. He had graduated in arts from Meiji University in 1951. One of his teachers was Fumio Kitaoka. In the 1980 he went to the USA for demonstrations of the Japanese woodblock printmaking technique. Yasushi Omoto made prints in silkscreen technique as well. Main subjects of his print works are landscapes and nature scnes.

Yasu Mori

Yasu Mori, a female artist, was born in Kyoto in 1922. She graduated in 1941 from the First Women's High School. She contributed to the print Biennales in Tokyo of 1957, 1960 and 1962. In the 1960s she stayed in the U.S.A. for two years. After her return to Japan she took a teaching position at Osaka University of Arts. Her medium is the woodblock print.

Yasu Kato graduated from the Kyoto College of Crafts and Textiles and worked as an illustrator of children's books. He had studied with Unichi Hiratsuka. After World War II Yasu Kato had many national and international solo exhibitions. He is represented in renowned museums, for instance in the "National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C."

Mr. Yang Dehua passed away in 2002 - by far too early - after a long period of disease and hospitalization. The artist had worked at Qujing Art Institute in Yunnan as a painter, printmaker and art teacher for the younger generation of artists. His painting and printmaking in philosophy and figurative style had been formed under the old political era of social realism. During the last decade of his life, Yang Dehua had developed a passion for the culture and people of Yunnan and China's western provinces like Tibet. The artist exhibited regularly in China's top level art exhibitions and received awards at these art shows. His works were shown in several countries including the United States of America (New York) and are in many major musuems in China.

Zhang Baibo

Zhang Baibo was born in Chingdao in China. Apart from woodblock prints, he uses an innovative technique where he carves an engraving on plates of plaster. It creates a relief effect. He perticipated "100 Views of Eternal China" project. Zhang Baibo has exhibited widely in China and abroad among others in the United States, Australia, Japan (1982: Kanagawa Prefecture Art Museum), Canada, France, Germany and India. His pastel colors and the tenderful designs with relief effect appeal much to Western art lovers.

Yang Yongsheng was born in 1967 in Qujing City, Yunnan province. He graduated from the print department of Yunnan Fine Art Academy. Later he became director of the Qujing Print Institute. His artworks are in Chinese and Japanese museums. Yang Yongsheng received awards at art exhibitions in Yunnan and in Canada. In 2005 Yang Yongsheng received a full fellowship by the Ford Foundation and began to make his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Hawaii.

Zhang Ji is currently (2007) an employed artist of Qujing Printmaking Institute. He was born in Huize of Yunnan Province in 1969. In 1991 he graduated from Yuxi Teacher's College and in 1999 from the Fine Arts Department of Yunnan Arts University. In 2000 he finished his course of MFA (Master of Fine Arts) at Nanjing Arts University. Zhang Ji now works as a teacher of Qujing Teacher's College. He is a member of Yunnan Artists Association.
