Lois Gilder spent the two years at the American School in Japan as a preschool teacher. While living in Japan, they started collecting prints depicting the Japanese board game Go. When they returned to California, Peter and Lois opened Arts and Designs of Japan in Carmel selling prints, tansu, fabrics, baskets and other Japanese antiques. Soon they began to specialize in prints and closed the gallery in 1978 to work from a home office. Arts and Designs of Japan has been in San Francisco since 1982.
