Arts and Designs of Japan has been buying and selling Japanese prints for over 30 years. A pilgrimage to Japan in 1971 led to a two year stay during which Peter Gilder, the owner of Arts and Designs of Japan, achieved Nidan (Second Degree Master) status. Lois Gilder spent the two years at the American School in Japan as a preschool teacher. While living in Japan, they started collecting prints depicting the Japanese board game Go. When they returned to California, Peter and Lois opened Arts and Designs of Japan in Carmel selling prints, tansu, fabrics, baskets and other Japanese antiques. Soon they began to specialize in prints and closed the gallery in 1978 to work from a home office. Arts and Designs of Japan has been in San Francisco since 1982. They offer a very large selection of prints in all categories and price ranges. Peter and Lois Gilder are members of the Ukiyoe Dealers Association of Japan, the Dutch Society and the Ukiyoe Society of America.
