Shima Seien was born in Sakei with the given name Narie as the daughter of a Japanese painter. She had studied under Kitano Tsunetomi and Noda Kyuho. Shima Seien painted mainly bijin-ga - pictures of beautiful women - in a mixture of traditional Japanese and modern style.
After world war II she moved to Osaka where she stayed and painted until the end of her life.
