Tomiya Oda was born in Okayama Prefecture under the real name of Onishi Ichitaro. He studied Japanese style-painting as a student of Kitano Tsunetomi. After finishing his studies at the Kitano Tsunetomi School, he worked as an illustrator for the magazine publishing company Kurakusha. In 1930s he created a series of bijin prints published by Osaka Mokuhansha and Hakuyosha.
