Chiura OBATA  -  1885 - 1975      Japanese American Artist

Chiura Obata was trained as an ink painter when he was still a child. As a young man he came to California in 1903. He received a post as an art instructor at Berkeley University in 1932. From 1942-45 he and his wife shared the fate of 100,000 other Japanese Americans and were held in different internment camps. After 1945 the artist could continue his former work at Berkeley University until his retirement in 1954.
