Kigen Nakagawa was born in Nagano prefecture. He was a student of Ishii Hakutei and even for a brief period, studied under the famous Fauvist artist Henri Matisse in France in 1919. He worked as a painter and printmaker of moku-hanga (self-made woodblock prints). The moku-hanga were made in the 1930s and 1940s and are rare.
