Kaido Yamada was born in Maruoka, Echizen province. He studied Nihon-ga under Gensai Yukoku. Together with Kichido Utsumi and Udo Nagata, Kaido was well known as "Hokuriku Sando", Three "Do" from Hokuriku area . He was very active in Bunten and Kyoto art circles, participated in the establishment of Nihon Nan-ga In.
