Masayuki Miyata was born 1926 in Tokyo. Although he never got any formal art training, his carreer was started in 1954 as he became a book designer. His extraordinary works were noticed by the famous autor Junichiro Tanizaki, who then asked Miyata to illustrate his novels. Miyata was renowned for his masterpieces of kiri-e (Japanese paper cuts), which he created by using only one small blade.
