Tsuruzo ISHII  -  1887-1973      Member of Imperial Art Academy

Tsuruzo Ishii was the younger brother of the artist Ishii Hakutei. He had graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1910. The artist was active in the sosaku hanga artist associations but exhibited also at the official, government-sponsored art exhibitions like Bunten and Teiten. With Yamamoto Kanae, the "grandfather" of the sosaku hanga movement, he participated in the somewhat obscure "children's free art movement" and "farmers art movement". These were the favorite projects of Yamamoto Kanae after he had been "infected" with the ideas of communism during a stay in Moscow. These projects soon failed. Tsuruzo Ishii made a normal career in government-sponsored institutions and became professor at Tokyo School of Fine Arts and member of the Imperial Art Academy.
