Letsu Sugiyama was born in Tokyo in 1925. He moved to Europe in 1948. After he received an award from Salon d'Automne (Autumn Salon), he became a member of the salon in 1956. He also received an award in 1962. But after he briefly lost his eyesight in 1968, he returned to Japan where he successfully combined his extensive western art education with Japanese delicate composition and colors. Since 1969, he has been working in a large project titled "Women of Japan". The project received critical acclaim in Japan, USA and Australia. He currently lives in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
