William HEINE  -  1827-1885      Images of Japan from the Perry Expedition

William Heine was a German painter artist and scientist. He became famous when he received the chance to accompany the first expedition of the US fleet under Commander Matthew Perry to Japan in 1853. William Heine made sketches of the expedition and of what he could see of Japan that was a forbidden country for foreigners at that time. Later William Heine published these ca. 400 sketches as lithographs in different albums translated into several languages.
