Kazan WATANABE  -  1793-1841      A Tragedy

Kazan Watanabe was an Edo painter and printmaker and the son of a samurai. He committed suicide after having been sentenced to death by the Tokugawa administration and later pardoned to permanent house arrest. The artist had secretely studied Western painting, culture and language (Dutch) which had been forbidden during his lifetime.
