Salvador DALI - 1904-1998

Salvador Dali is one of the great names of the Surrealist movement. He studied at the Madrid academy. When he came to Paris in 1928 he met two other great artists, Picasso and Mirò. He soon became a central figure of the Surrealists. Dali was a great admirer of Raphael. His large format paintings showing significant historical events and personalities like Christopher Columbus, Lenin or Wilhelm Tell, are like an hommage to the old masters. In 1933, Salvador Dali had his first one-man show in New York and in 1934 in London. In 1936 he was on the cover of Time Magazine. By then he was well-known with his excentric moustache. St. Petersburg in Florida has a great Dali museums. Another Dali museum was established in his Spanish home town, Figueras.
