Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki was born in Danzig in 1726 and died in Berlin in 1801. Originally he was in the retail business working in the shop of his uncle. Somehow he and his brother got into arts starting with enamel painting. He soon got famous, not only with enamal painting but with etchings as well. He he was very prolific. His etchings comprise 2075 images on 978 plates. He used to engrave up to 12 different images on one plate. The impressions then were cut into the single images.
