Kyosai Kawanabe was born as the son of a samurai. He was an artist with many skills working as a painter, printmaker and illustrator. As a child he joined the school of Kuniyoshi Utagawa. He is famous for his prints with humorous and caricature like subjects. He is also nicknamed the 'comic genius'. Kyosai is said to have had a strong liking for 'sake', a Japanese alcoholic beverage.
