Gakutei YASHIMA  -  1786-1868      Poet, Writer and Printmaker

Gakutei was appreciated as a good Ukiyo-e craftsman in his time. But he was better known as a poet and writer. Gakutei was a kyoka poet, putting his own poems on his prints. He also translated a 16th century Chinese novel, "Hsi-yi" (Journey to the West) in Japanese and enriched it with illustrations of his own design. And Gakutei produced many excellent surimono and book illustrations.
