Impressionism started as a rebellion of a few young art students in Paris around 1865 against a rigid art establishment. It took the Impressionist artists about 20 years before ridicule was replaced by recognition.

Claude Monet, 1840-1926, was one of the founding fathers of French Impressionism. Claude Monet's concern was to reflect the influence of light on a subject. Monet never abandoned his Impressionist painting style until his death in 1926 when Fauvism and Cubism were en vogue and when abstract painting came into existence.

Toulouse Lautrec, like no other nineteenth century artist was deeply influenced by Japanese woodblock prints. Just like the exuberant life of the amusement quarters of the Japanese Edo period, it was the nightlife of Montmartre in Paris, which inspired the works of this incredible artist. And like the great Ukiyo-e artist Utamaro, Toulouse Lautrec not only painted the world of brothels, but was a frequent guest himself.
