Kiyoshi Kobayakawa was a contemporary of shin hanga artists like Hasui Kawase or Ito Shinsui. He specialized in prints of beautiful women. Thus he followed the tradition of the 'bijin' genre of the 18th and 19th century on one hand. But his images are a break with tradition by showing a new type of modern women who are dressed after the latest Western fashion, smoke and drink alcohol.

There are few Japanese printmakers, no matter if 19th, 20th or 21st century, who have not created at least one view of Mount Fuji, the sacred landmark of Japan. Among the woodblock prints of Mt. Fuji made in the twentieth century those by Toshi Yoshida are in my view outstanding for their beauty.

The shin hanga activities were mostly centered in Tokyo, encouraged by the woodblock print publisher Shozaburo Watanabe. But also Kyoto and to a lesser degree Osaka were active in the shin hanga art movement.

When the collector and art dealer Robert O. Muller died in 2003, he left the largest collection of Japanese prints - mostly shin hanga - that the world has ever seen. A few art dealers who had a closer insight into this huge collection, were worried that the market for shin hanga prints would break down. It did not happen. Now, 6 years later, the part of the collection that was made available for the market is coming to an end and prices are going up.
