Zhang Xiaochun is a well-known artist from the Yunnan Art School. He works in the woodblock reduction technique. His style is diverse and colorful like Yunnan, the province where he was born and where he lives and works.

While the dealing with the past and reflections on cultural clashes in today's China are often the focus for Chinese artists above the age of forty, this young woman represents a different style. Her pop-art compositions and gaudy colors express in our view the new life-style feeling of many young urban Chinese.

Mr. Yang Yongsheng is a leading Chinese printmaker from Yunnan province. Currently (2006) he makes his master degree in fine arts at the printmaking department of Hawaii University as a fellow of the Ford Foundation. Yang Yongsheng works in reduction woodblocks, woodblocks and etchings. His works from the 1990s are a part of the history of what is now called the Yunnan Art School.

Contemporary Chinese artist Liu Zhi is exceptional. Fortunately I am not the only one with this opinion. I am in good company. Liu Zhi is collected by the Benetton (United Colors of ...)family. And in 2012 Liu Zhi had exhibitions in Lille and Montpellier in France. Look at his surreal paintings and you will understand why this artist has a great career in front of him.

Over the last decades a new technique how to create a multicolor woodblock print has emerged and become widely used by Chinese printmakers. The process is called reduction woodblock printing or sometimes also no-waste printing. All colors are printed just out of one block which is recarved for each color. Thus the original block is destroyed during the creation process and further copies beyond the first edition are impossible.

As a Westerner I am reminded of traditional Chinese ink paintings when I look at Si Riufeng's art works. This young artist has certainly been influenced by the old Chinese masters. But there is more behind. In some of his paintings one recognizes either old houses or the skyline of new modern urban buildings.

Mr. Lak Shanhang is engaged in Buddhist art - a very special Buddhist art. He paints after murals or statues that were found in the world-famous Dunhuang caves, now a world heritage site. Being born in Dunhuang, he was engaged in the 1990s in a conservation project for the Dunhuang caves. Now he works as a professional freelance artist.
