The 47 Ronin      Popular story based on real events.

The story of the 47 ronin is one of the best known samurai stories in and outside of Japan. The books, movies, TV films and theater performances are more than numerous. The story is based on real events that took place in feudal Japan of 1703.

10 Types of Female Nudes      Forbidden as Pornography.

The Japanese painter and printmaker Ishikawa Toraji, 1875-1964 created a series of ten voluptuous nudes title "Ten Types of Female Nudes". The Japanese authorities banned the series for its "pornographic" nature.

Sano Seiji - born 1959      Student of Ido Masao.

Sano Seiji is one of today's successful artists who live and work in Kyoto or in the rural areas around the old imperial city. The favorite subject of these artists is the beauty of old Japan. Sano Seiji combines the woodblock technique and romantic subjects in a masterly way. The results are images with a touch of impressionism.

Waichi Hayashi - born 1951      Master of Color, Composition and Light

Everybody speaks about globalization - the whole world one market place and the whole world a mix of Western commercial culture and local traditions. Strangely enough the field of contemporary Japanese printmaking is anything else than global. Japan has an immense affluence of great contemporary printmakers. But with a few exceptions most of them are little or not at all known outside Japan. We discovered Waichi Hayashi by recommendation of one of his students. His woodblock prints are mesmerizing.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi was the second unifier of Japan after a period of more than 100 years of civil wars that had ravaged the country. His career from a poor farmer's son to the most powerful man in Japan is more than unusual.

Torii Kotondo made only 21 known prints - all of them images of beautiful women. They belong to the finest works of art of the Shin Hanga movement.

Tatsumi Shimura 1907-1980      Beautiful Women.

Before the war Tatsumi Shimura had worked for a woman's magazine. After the war he designed several prints of beautiful women. The women of his prints look very fashionable, trendy, beautiful and cute - with big eyelashes and a sensual lipstick mouth.

Miki Suizan      Selected Views of Kyoto

Miki Suizan is one of the artists who made print designs for the Kyoto publisher Sato Shotaro. Six images of bijin - beautiful women - and eight landscape prints are among the finest of Shin Hanga.

Toraji Ishikawa - 1875-1964      Painter and Printmaker.

Although Toraji Ishikawa was a painter and printmaker with a wide variety of subjects and a focus on landscapes, everybody knows him mainly for a series of ten prints in Shin Hanga style, published in 1934 and titled "Ten tpyes of female nudes".
