The story of the 47 ronin is one of the best known samurai stories in and outside of Japan. The books, movies, TV films and theater performances are more than numerous. The story is based on real events that took place in feudal Japan of 1703.

The Japanese painter and printmaker Ishikawa Toraji, 1875-1964 created a series of ten voluptuous nudes title "Ten Types of Female Nudes". The Japanese authorities banned the series for its "pornographic" nature.

Before the war Tatsumi Shimura had worked for a woman's magazine. After the war he designed several prints of beautiful women. The women of his prints look very fashionable, trendy, beautiful and cute - with big eyelashes and a sensual lipstick mouth.

Miki Suizan is one of the artists who made print designs for the Kyoto publisher Sato Shotaro. Six images of bijin - beautiful women - and eight landscape prints are among the finest of Shin Hanga.

Although Toraji Ishikawa was a painter and printmaker with a wide variety of subjects and a focus on landscapes,
everybody knows him mainly for a series of ten prints in Shin Hanga style,
published in 1934 and titled
"Ten tpyes of female nudes".
