Masks are an essential part of the Japanese noh theater whilst the actors of the Japanese kabuki theater perform without masks. But there is one exception. The kabuki play "Nanatsumen" (The Seven Masks) is a fast role change play with masks. This play and the noh theater are the background for images of Japanese masks shown on Japanese prints.

If you want to explain to a non-expert of Japanese prints what shin hanga is, show him ten images of landscape prints by Tsuchiya Koitsu. Although Koitsu Tsuchiya is by most not seen as important as Hasui Kawase, you will hardly find another landscape printmaker who incorporates so much the essence of shin hanga like this important Japanese printmaker of the first half of the twentieth century.

Kunichika Toyohara was called a "forgotten master" by Amy Reigle Newland in the only Kunichika biography I know of "Time Present and Time Past". During the last years of his life Kunichika designed a series of hundred kabuki roles played by one very popular actor of the time - Ichikawa Danjuro IX. Today the series is regarded as one of Kunichika's best print works.

Teruhide Kato's beautiful woodblock prints can be enjoyed with a book about the artist's works titled "Kyoto Romance". The title characterizes his art prints perfectly. The serene images taken from Kyoto, the artist's residence, are like a big love romance with Kyoto and Japanese woodblock prints.

Canadian artist Ted Colyer learned woodblock printmaking in traditional Japanese style by the great master Toshi Yoshida. He stayed in Japan for 17 years before he returned to Canada where he lives and works in beautiful Vancouver.
