Mount Fuji is a sacred mountain for the Japanese and a kind of landmark for Japan. The cone-shaped mountain has been a favorite subject for Japanese artists since the early 19th century. Osamu Sugiyama, one of my favorite contemporary Japanese printmakers has published the first designs of a series of 10 views of Mount Fuji.

The art of Japanese painting is full of mesmerizing Asian charm when you look at it from a purely decorative view. But it is also a subject that can be a bit confusing for novices when you want to learn more about it. Different painting schools and styles, a variety of different media, the deep roots in Zen Buddhism and the use of specific terms from the Japanese language make this art form not always easily accessible for Westerners.

Paul Gauguin, 1848-1903, was born in Paris as the son of a jounalist and a Peruvian mother. When the family had to leave France for political reasons, Paul's father died during the sea voyage to Peru. And Gauguin was nineteen years old, when he lost his mother.

This article could be titled soemthing like 'Latest blog from Songzhuang artist village'. It is based on a letter and photos that I have received by an artist and friend of mine who has lived in Songzhuang artist village for several years, and who has greatly helped to make artelino's first Grand Auction of Chinese paintings (Feb 12-19, 2012) possible.

Fumio Fujita is a major artist of Japanese post-war woodblock printmaking. During more recent years his reputation has suffered in my view by stereotype, repetitive images of white-bark trees. This may have built a wrong image of the artist. In reality his works are quite diverse and full of creativity.
