Bungei Kurabu and other newly established publishers published popular literary magazines which were aimed for female readers in Meiji - Taisho era. The attractive frontispiece illustrations, "kuchi-e", by the leading ukiyo-e and Nihon-ga artists facilitated the sales of the magazines.
