Title The Substitute, Mongol - Le Remplacant Mongole
  hand signed, PJ seal
Artist Paul Jacoulet 1902-1960
Description "Le Remplacant Mongole". A girl in Chinese costume is holding a rabbit as a substitute and lamenting her lost baby.
This print shows the virtuoso printing and carving techniques, which were achieved in the early 20th century. Due to the scarcity of younger generations of professional woodblock print carvers and printers, the height of the technological achievement shown in Jacoulet's prints will never been duplicated again.
Signature "Paul Jacoulet" in pencil.
Seal Peony.
Dated 1955.
Medium/Technique Woodblock print.
Impression Excellent ... Printed on Jacoulet in Japanese and his initials watermarked paper.
Colors Excellent ... Gold and silver colored Metallic pigments. Mica on parts of the clothing. Gold leafs sprinkled on the background. Exquisit, unfaded colors seldom seen in Jacoulet's prints.
Condition Excellent - very good ... Slight creases on the margins. Slight foxing on the upper left background.
Numbered Fewer than 60 impressions were printed.
Note Seal of the printer Honda Tetsunosuke and carver Maeda Kentaro on the right margin. Elaborate PJ seal is stamped on the back.
